Mandom's unique male body odour research has discovered a new "third odour" unique to men in their 30s and 40s that is different from sweat odour and aging odour. We termed this as "middle-aged odour," and in 2013, we were the first in the world to identify that the causative ingredient for middle-aged odour was diacetyl.
Diacetyl, which is the causative agent of middle-aged odour, is generated when lactic acid contained in sweat is metabolized and broken down by staphylococci living in the scalp.
Middle-aged odour is a type of odour that resembles the smell of used oil, and you can smell it even at 1/100 of the amount of acetic acid(the main ingredient in vinegar). While men are less aware of it, women are more likely to notice it and find it unpleasant- hence resulting in what some people may call the ‘old man smell’.
Middle-aged odour tends to occur mainly in the back and top of the head.
(Middle-aged odour is different from aging odour that peaks at the age of 50.)
It is known that body odour(excluding bad breath and foot odour) can be broadly divided into three types: general sweat odour, aging odour, and middle-aged odour- which is a characteristic of middle-aged men.
Sweat odour mainly comes from the armpits and aging odour from the back, while middle-aged odour is primarily present from the back of the head and the back of the neck.
In addition to sweat odour and middle-aged odour that peaks around the age of 40, middle-aged men will also start to develop a new type of odour called aging odour.
Effectively removes middle-aged odour found in matured men!
